Nestled in the heart of Hampshire, on the border of the New Forest, The Secret Garden is within easy reach of Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester and the New Forest. It was the perfect venue to reimagine the most romantic outdoor wedding ceremony.
I envisioned a breathtaking outdoor wedding that highlighted nature's beauty, set amidst Mother Nature's best. With a woodland clearing, a silver birch aisle, a sparkling lake, and an orchard, we were spoilt for choice of where to hold the wedding.
Choosing the lakeside as our setting evoked a lively yet tranquil joy. Surrounded by trees in various shades, with the water shimmering behind us as a stunning backdrop, it epitomised the perfect ceremony location I could have hoped for. Watching the bride walk down the green path toward her groom, with the breeze whispering through our hair, created the most beautiful scene I had ever imagined. Standing at the front to officiate, I felt both relaxed and energised by the fresh air and breathtaking surroundings. What a beautiful, memorable setting for a wedding ceremony; I loved it.
The Styling: Untamed Romance Meets Natural Elegance
The bride’s dress highlighted the season's flowers with delicate details and a perfect fit. Her veil, suitable for the location, fluttered in the breeze during those golden photography moments. Her flower crown complemented the look beautifully, featuring seasonal flowers that matched the coral, pinks, and soft tones of the day's colour palette.
Not forgetting the Groom’s attire, of course. A warm, muted set lifted by the accents of colour to complement the bride and the surroundings, smart, sophisticated, yet with an untamed romantic vibe.
The wedding breakfast took place lakeside, with tables and chairs arranged amid a lush green meadow. To the right, the lake sparkled; to the left, silver birch trees swayed gently. The setting was intimate and elegant, with luxurious dining sets, candles, floral arrangements, leaves for name placements, and colour-coordinated place settings that complemented the day's overall palette. A rustic wooden bar was set up for guests to enjoy refreshing wedding cocktails while taking in the lake view. It created a perfect blend of nature and luxury, proving outdoor events can be just as refined without compromise.
Designing the Space: The Role of an Independent Celebrant
I was fortunate to be supported by an incredible team, each contributing their unique skills and talents throughout the day. Cohesion is essential when organising a wedding ceremony. Coordinating the ceremony space, wedding breakfast, reception area, and photography takes extensive time and effort.
As a celebrant, ensuring the ceremony space is used to its fullest potential is crucial, and I aim to make every guest feel valued and able to see, hear, and experience every element of the ceremony. My role is to facilitate this, both through the design of the space and during the ceremony's scripting. I am committed to providing the couple and their guests with an unforgettable experience.
We included a handfasting in the shoot to showcase a meaningful ritual and demonstrate how it can seamlessly integrate into a ceremony. Set beneath the silver birch aisle, it created a whimsical, joyful atmosphere. I arranged the colour-coordinated ribbons around their wrists, and at the right moment, the couple literally ‘tied the knot’. Adding symbolic elements to a ceremony adds a personal, heartfelt touch. Whether it’s ring warming, sand blending, carving promises into oathing stones, or drinking from a lovers' cup, these rituals lend a truly special vibe to the event.
This shoot, I hope, has helped couples to see how beautiful an outdoor ceremony can truly be, how evocative, stunning and romantic choosing to say your vows in the open air amongst nature's beauty can make for the most memorable wedding day.
An Excerpt from the Ceremony Script
A short piece from the ceremony script I wrote for the bride and groom;
From a serendipitous “meet cute” to discovering their “soul mate,” it’s as if their destinies were written in the stars. Carrie and Jason’s love story is deep, consuming and impossible to ignore. An understanding that goes beyond words, beyond logic, beyond even time. Their connection feels instinctive, like they've recognised each other long before they met.
In a world that can sometimes feel uncertain or isolating, what Carrie and Jason have found in each other is a place of belonging. In the words of Emily Brontë, “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same,” and today, we celebrate the extraordinary bond they share and the journey they set out together!
As we have arrived at this heartfelt union, let us all enjoy the most important part of this ceremony and why we are all gathered in this magical woodland to celebrate Carrie and Jason’s love and commitment.
Planning an Outdoor Wedding Ceremony in Hampshire: Expert Tips
Here are some top tips when planning an outdoor wedding ceremony.
1. Sound and Acoustic Flow for Open-Air Ceremonies
With nature having its own sense of humour, everyone must be able to hear the ceremony clearly. A PA system can help those sitting at the back of the congregation. Or better yet, seating everyone in a horseshoe with the ceremony in the middle can often overcome the issue of ‘Can you hear me at the back?’
2. Managing UK Weather & Wet Weather Contingencies
We all know that the weather in Britain is temperamental. Having a good wedding planner on board will definitely give you a Plan B if rain decides to make a show. A marquee, tipi tent, sailcloth tent, barn, or similar is a great way to ease those weather anxieties. And having a few clear umbrellas is a fab way to take cover from showers and makes for some fun photographs.
3. Can you Legally Marry Outdoors in England?
Currently, legal marriages must take place in licensed venues or locations managed by local councils. Couples wishing to hold their wedding in a scenic spot like a lakeside or meadow across Hampshire and Dorset typically book a simple 2+2 statutory appointment at their local registry office (such as Winchester, Fareham, Petersfield, Portsmouth, Southampton or Bournemouth) to sign the legal documents with two witnesses, costing around £60-£70, similar to registering a birth. Afterwards, they can have their dream wedding ceremony at their preferred location, with everyone witnessing it as a full wedding.
